Yesterday, Cartoon Network announced that The Powerpuff Girls will return to the small screen in the form of a brand new television series. Following on from the one-off special that aired earlier this year in January, the trio of heroes are expected to return in 2016.

The one-off special, a CGI reimagining of the series entitled The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed, featured former Beatle Ringo Starr as Townsville’s flamboyant mathematical genius Fibonacci Sequins. Starr also performed the special’s theme song, ‘I Wish I Was A Powerpuff Girl’.

Presumably, this new series will be a reimagining of the original concept, complete with a brand new continuity, rather than following on from the original series. As Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for North America, Cartoon Network Enterprises, states, “The Powerpuff Girls brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation”.

As the announcement is still fairly fresh, no news as to who’s starring in the series or any production staff has been announced yet.
