When it was revealed that X-FILES is being revived for a six-episode mini event the immediate response was who, if anyone, from the original show will be coming back. While Chris Carter, one of the lead writers for the series, expressed his desire to bring back everyone, star David Duchovny revealed that that desire is closer to reality.
Speaking on David Letterman, Duchovny gave fans a little more information regarding the shows impending return. When asked about the original cast, he said ‘There’s Gillian and I, we’re original. Mitch Pileggi will come back, and the cigarette-smoking man — if that means anything to anyone — will be coming back.’
Fans of the series should know Mitch Pileggi as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner, who appeared throughout the nine-series run. The Cigarette-Smoking Man, who was a nebulous villain throughout the show, was originally played by William B. Davis; however it is uncertain whether or not he will be returning to the role given the phrasing of Duchovny’s quote.
TV Wise might have also revealed more returning cast members, as it reports that both Annabeth Gish and Robert Patrick are planned to return as their respected characters. However, the site claims that no deals are currently in place.
THE X-FILES is scheduled to begin shooting this summer in Vancouver, with plans for new one-off cases and episodes that will continue and expand the mythology of the series.
