Remember that heartbreaking, beautiful, moving cartoon about unlikely friendship and self sacrifice and growing up? The one directed by then first-time-feature’s-director Brad Bird who went on to helm, among other great family films, THE INCREDIBLES (need we say more?). Yup, we’re talking about THE IRON GIANT: the beloved cult animation feature that’s being re-released this Autumn in cinemas for a couple of days, where it hasn’t been seen for 16 years. I’ll see you in the queue.
Our generation’s E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL, set during the Cold War, Vin Diesel played the voice of the giant robot who crashes to earth and befriends a young boy. It is a touching, tear-jerking story, but also one left open ended that would easily flow into a sequel.
Vin Diesel teasingly took to Facebook yesterday to hint at such an occurrence:
I have been very lucky to have played so many interesting characters… one of the first and one of my favorites is… the Iron Giant.’
P.s. Don’t be surprised when you hear WB announce the sequel.
Although he isn’t explicitly confirming that Warner Brothers are actioning a sequel, and his disclaimer could be seen as more of a conversation-starter meant to do exactly what it’s done – namely get everyone talking about it and excited to see it back in theatres – it’s still great to read those nostalgic words 16 years after the beloved film first came out. Brad Bird is currently busy getting another sequel to a family favourite going – THE INCREDIBLES 2 – so if Vin Diesel’s prediction comes true, it won’t be for a while yet. Here’s hoping!
