Zac Efron’s seemingly passion project hasn’t lighted much passion in anyone else as the EDM based DJing film WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS falls quite literally flat on its face.
From what it first seemed at a glance, this could have been an enjoyable film, but instead opting for a more sub-plot route and just neglecting it’s EDM premise, WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS has turned out to be one of the worst major studio releases of all time earning a very disappointing $1.8 million from 2,333 screens.
Here’s what Warner Bros. executive Jeff Goldstein had to say on the flop:
“This was a passion project for Zac Efron, and we believe in him. Yes, the result was disappointing, but this was a small film.”
This is actually surprising from Zac Efron, who over the years has managed to garner quite the fan base, but it seems even that isn’t able to pull this film from its dark depths. It’s sad to see a passion project die out like this as it’ll probably stop major studios taking risks on films actors are really pushing for, and after the past few years Efron has submerged himself in the passion project and indie style of filmmaking we tend to love.
WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS is currently in cinemas now.
