If there are two things I love, its cars and Batman so when I was asked to head over to Media City, Salford this afternoon to check out the new Batmobile featured in Warner Bros. epic BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. let’s just say I had a fan girl moment for me and geeked out as I raced across town to check out the Dark Knight’s new set of wheels!
This is the very vehicle in which Affleck makes his debut as the Caped Crusader. Flown over by Turkish Airlines only yesterday, and parked like a forbidding, winged tank in the Piazza there she stood; all 3.5 tonnes of her! 20 feet in length and 12 feet wide the newly fashioned Batmobile is formidable.
Designed by creature and visual-effects icon Patrick Tatopoulos and built by Dennis McCarthy, it boasts a forward facing Gatling gun, twin .50 calibre rotating front cannons and unlike any other Batmobile before it, it’s bespoke hydraulics system means it is able to raise and lower the chassis when doing certain manoeuvres, menacingly escalating upwards readying for battle and lowering when cruising through the streets of Gotham.
Left hand drive with an automatic gearbox, the body of the vehicle is made from carbon fibre and fibreglass much like the 1989 Batmobile and is fully bespoke custom-made, packed with a 6.8 litre Corvette engine that gives this beast a whopping 600 BHP, and when the engine was switched on and revved it was like a jet engine had been started up right next to me!
The interior of the vehicle is camera ready and what you see inside is what we’ll get to see on the film as they used the car itself as a set. The tyres are shaved down Alliance tractor tyres so the vehicle isn’t able to go above 50 miles an hour or they will begin to misshape; the back wheel is a gigantic 50 inches! The exterior of this Batmobile is similar to Ben Affleck’s new suit in Dawn of Justice, much truer to the comics, the vehicle looks worn, grizzled and dinged like it has seen its fair share of maimed and bloody criminals stuck to its bonnet.
Purpose built by Wayne, chock full of stolen Wayne Industries technology, military grade armaments, stealth and active protection systems, this sophisticated prototype’s only function is to allow the Caped Crusader to fight crime. Director Zack Snyder has hinted that we will get to see the Batmobile do some really cool stuff in the upcoming movie but has not let slip any spoilers so far.
After her brief surprise visit to Salford’s Media City, she left, making a deafening exit to cheers from the crowd and is now on her way to spend the next four days displayed in London’s Leicester Square Odeon ahead of the highly anticipated theatrical release of the superhero smackdown which pits Affleck’s brooding and bitter Batman against Henry Cavil’s Krytonian super-being Kal-El.
The vehicle will also feature in David Ayer’s spinoff SUICIDE SQUAD as witnessed by our Jonathan on the Toronto set.
ScreenRelish would like to thank Warner Bros. and Alison Hogarth for their time.
