Nordic Noir is at a height of popularity on British television screens. BBC has, rather intelligently, got behind this craze, utilising its many channels to showcase the best of the – what you could now call – genre.

It began with popular adaptations, such as THE RETURNED and THE KILLING, and then audiences wanted the originals; TRAPPED is one of the most recent efforts to of hit the UK small screen via BBC Four, and it was met with widespread acclaim among both audiences and critics. They aren’t wrong, and the series, created by Baltasar Kormakur and now hitting home entertainment formats here in the UK, is tense, enthralling and damn right original! RVK Studios’ hit show is a winner for fans of Nordic Noir, and beyond!

TRAPPED is a one-off Icelandic television series, which follows an ensemble cast who inhabit the remote Icelandic easterly town of Seyðisfjörður. Beginning with a tragic event, the narrative fast-forwards seven years, presenting the audience with a setting that is afflicted by a set of people who all hold secrets.

When a mutilated body is found, and suspicion falling of the passengers on an incoming ferry, a criminal investigation is launched, but with dangerous weather keeping lead detectives from Reykjavik at bay, it falls to several characters, most importantly Ólafur Darri Ólafsson’s local cop Andri, to solve the crime.

It sounds simple but in reality TRAPPED is compelling, complex and challenging, creating a multi-layered narrative that keeps its audience on their toes. This type of formula is not unfamiliar, but when done well its satisfying. A well done it is!

Thanks to a slow-building tension, carefully crafted by the cast and creative team behind this award-winning series, TRAPPED escapes genre cliches to provide viewers with a bold and daring show that never strays.

With a continuing mystery and stellar supporting cast, this will serve as repeat viewing. The competition is fierce right now, but with Kormakur as the guiding force (and helming the opening and final episode) – known for directing Hollywood hits CONTRABAND, 2 GUNS and EVEREST – TRAPPED is able to stay within the spotlight and it doesn’t get lost at sea among an array of other similar series’.

With sub-plots galore and lashings of atmospheric visuals, this is riveting stuff from the first episode to the last.

TRAPPED is available on DVD and Blu-ray April 11 via Arrow Films. You can also read our exclusive interview with star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson on his role in the series RIGHT HERE
