When the second season of Marvel’s DAREDEVIL premiered on Netflix earlier this year, it brought with it two popular superheroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Elektra (Elodie Yung) and Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher (Jon Bernthal). The latter of which ended up being praised as the highlight of the season. So much so that Netflix has ordered a spinoff series for Bernthal’s Punisher.
Marvel and Netflix officially announced the spinoff series, revealing Steve Lightfoot (HANNIBAL, CASUALTY) joining the project as executive producer and showrunner. Speaking about the character of Frank Castle, Lightfoot said:
“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world. After watching Jon’s performance in Marvel’s DAREDEVIL I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero of his own.
A Punisher series has been heavily rumored before DAREDEVIL season two had premiered. However, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb initially downplayed these rumors.
The Punisher series will be the sixth Netflix series from Marvel, though there is no premiere date set. Marvel’s next series, LUKE CAGE, will arrive later this year, with both IRON FIST and THE DEFENDERS likely appearing in 2017. Netflix has also confirmed a second season of JESSICA JONES is also in the works, and it is very likely that DAREDEVIL will return for a third season.
Marvel and Netflix’s current schedule allows for two shows to premiere each year, which would place a PUNISHER series sometime in 2018. Although these shows are huge in scope and production, it certainly seems they are great for Netflix, as the streaming service continues to add new shows to its schedule.
With this in mind, the announcement of a PUNISHER series is completely unsurprising. As a character Frank Castle has a huge following, which has only grown with Bernthal’s performance. THE PUNISHER might be the first spinoff series ordered by Netflix, but chances are it will not be the last.
