One big thing about Marvel’s Cinematic Universe is it’s crossovers. When it first got started, the films where connected but still kept fairly separate. It isn’t until AVENGERS that the Marvel films have started crossing over from one another with characters appearing all over the place, heck we’re even getting Hulk showing up in THOR next year.
The same has been wanted from the TV side of things, yeah sure we’ve gotten LUEK CAGE in JESSICA JONES and all the heroes on Netflix will be coming into THE DEFENDERS next year, plus we’ve had Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury show up in AGENTS OF SHIELD, but that’s as far as it goes as Marvel don’t have any plans to crossover the films and TV.
We get brief mentions of superheroes in the TV shows, but we won’t be seeing DAREDEVIL fight alongside CAPTAIN AMERICA, or LUKE CAGE butting heads with IRON MAN. Marvel Television President Jeph Loeb has made this very clear:
“I can tell you that part of the challenge of doing this sort of thing is that the movies are planned out years in advance of what it is that we are doing. Television moves at an incredible speed. The other part of the problem is that when you stop and think about it, if I’m shooting a television series and that’s going to go on over a six-month or eight-month period, how am I going to get Mike [Colter] to be able to go be in a movie? I need Mike to be in a television show.”
That is a pretty big shame, especially as I’d already have loved to see some appearances of the characters in the films already, mainly seeing DAREDEVIL in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR in some way. I will say, it would be nice to allow the TV characters some form of cameo appearance in the film world just to show their all connected. I’m sure it wouldn’t be too difficult to have the DEFENDERS show up in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR in New York defending the city for a minute.
