Jack Nicholson is coming out of retirement to star alongside Kristen Wiig in the remake of German Oscar contender TONI ERDMANN.
Adam McKay alongside Will Ferrell and Wiig will produce the film, with Maren Ade, director of the original, being an executive producer, though there’s no word on who will direct the film just yet. A remake has been quietly in the works for a while but it was Nicholson himself who approached Paramount CEO and expressed interest in the role.
The film tells the story of Winifried Conradi (Peter Simonischek) who visits his estranged daughter Ines (Sandra Huller) and tries to reconnect with her with a series of practical jokes through his alter ego Toni Erdmann. The film, reviewed here, has received masses amounts of praise upon release and is seemingly the film to beat at the Oscars.
Nicholson hasn’t acted since 2010s HOW DO YOU NOW, aside from a brief appearance in I’M STILL HERE. Wiig, meanwhile, has DESPICABLE ME 3 and Alexander Payne’s DOWNSIZING arriving this year.
