David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO remake starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig had hoped to spawn a similar trilogy to the Swedish original but, upon its release, the wheels on the property slowed down. Now, Fede Alvarez has been confirmed by Sony to direct THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB as they move in a new direction.

This is not a part of the Millennium Trilogy but still focuses on Lisebeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist as the plot sends them on a new misadventure. Sony have made the decision to recast also, so Alvarez’s first task is to find a new Lisbeth. Alavarez most recently directed DON’T BREATHE and is developing a sequel to the film as well as working on MONSTERPOCALYPSE, INCOGNITO and DANTE’S INFERNO.

Steven Knight has written early drafts of the screenplay for THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB which Alvarez and Jay Basu have both since worked on. Sony have also announced a release date for the film, it will arrive in 2018.
